What to do if you smell gas

If you smell gas, do not use light switches, plug sockets, or naked flames, and do not smoke. Leave the property, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 from a safe distance before contacting an engineer.
A smell of gas should always be treated as a safety priority. Follow this order, and don't skip straight to calling a plumber or engineer.
What to do immediately
- Do not switch anything electrical on or off, including light switches, and do not use your mobile phone inside the property.
- Do not light a match, use a lighter, or smoke.
- Open doors and windows if you can do so safely on your way out, to help ventilate the property.
- Leave the property and get to a safe distance.
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately, from outside the property.
After the gas emergency service has been contacted
Once the immediate emergency has been dealt with and it's confirmed safe, you can arrange for a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect or repair the appliance or pipework involved.
